The East Mecklenburg CSU chapter had their first debate, where students were divided into two teams and debated the issue of school choice. Both sides had time to prepare and delivered researched arguments. This was done to gain further understanding of the issue.

We attended the "We Fight Back" anti extreme-right protest in First Ward Park, organized by several left-wing groups such as the Charlotte Metro Democratic Socialists of America and the Party for Socialism and Liberation. This was to protest Donald Trump's inauguration and agenda. There, we listened to people speak on a variety of issues, then we marched through uptown before returning to First Ward Park to listen to a final few speakers. While CSU is not affiliated with any political party nor any candidate for public office, and we didn't necessarily agree with all points brought up by the speakers, we attended in order to gain a further understanding of these views and support civic action.

We attended a workshop held by Mecklenburg County and those they hired to manage the Community Development Block Grant given by the Department of Housing and Urban Development. They held this meeting to get community feedback for which causes were most important for the grant money. This grant applies to projects and services benefiting people with low to moderate income, and applies to several towns in Mecklenburg County. While we were there, they asked us to list which specific causes should receive various amounts of money. Using the community feedback, they will develop a 5-year plan for how the money should be spent.
